Yanmar 4JH3E Diesel
engine

When the winds die, or we just want to motor about, our pilothouse
sailboat Mad Dog Voyager is powered by a Yanmar 4JH3E diesel engine. The
engine is fully enclosed and is reasonably quiet as it produces a top
output of 56 hp. Of course, running full throttle makes for a thirsty
engine and a noisy ride, so we usually throttle back to a comfortable 4
knots at about 2000 rpm. At this level the Yanmar 4JH3E delivers decent
thrust, while being relatively quiet and fuel efficient.
The Yanmar diesel engine is attached to a Yanmar Marine Gear. The
throttle is controlled by, as well as forward and reverse are selected
by, the Teleflex TFX Electronic throttle control. There are two throttle
control stations, one outside in the cockpit, one inside at the
Navigation Station. The Marine Gear continues on and by means of a
flexible shaft coupling by
Centaflex it
drives the
Flex-O-Fold folding 3 blade bronze propeller. (similar idea to a
Max-Prop)
The Yanmar diesel engine appears to be a robustly built unit that looks
to be easily maintained. We hope this is the case as it is in a
relatively tight location. CR Yachts must have faith in Yanmar as they
didn't leave lots of room for getting in and sitting beside the engine
to work on it. After all it is a sailboat not a powerboat. We haven't
put that many hours on it yet, but we hope that it will serve us well in
the years to come.
Engine location
The Yanmar engine is located under the companionway steps in she
main cabin on our

Product review:
Apart from a small problem with the wiring
harness that gave us troubles starting, the engine has never failed to
do it's job. It performs well and, being mounted on large rubber
mounting pads, doesn't transfer an excessive amount of vibration through
the hull. On the few occasions we've contacted Yanmar, the
service
provided by their main US office has been very good.
